The “Bah Humbug” award for ruining Christmas goes to Calvert County MD for closing Breezy Point beach on New Year’s Day when even the most slothful feel inclined to go for a walk.
Worse, the beach is closed from November 1 to April 30 and there doesn’t seem to be any particularly good reason for this. During beach season, the county charges for access to the sand and perhaps, in winter, they don’t think it is worthwhile to have a wee man there to take the money. God Forbid they should allow the hardy and outdoorsy to enjoy it for free at any time of year.
Much has been written here about the joys of Breezy Point with its sharks teeth treasures, horseshoe crab shells and fossilized finds. I had wanted to show off the beach to Spud Hughes and the Contessa, visiting from the UK, and provide them with a few souvenirs of their time by the Chesapeake Bay. Thwarted in this plan, we went for a slap-up lunch and then home to bed. I put on my new Vera Wang pyjamas, courtesy of the sale at Kohls, and haven’t taken them off since. The walk can wait for another year.
